Medical Tourism Safety Guide: How to Vet a Regenerative Medicine Clinic Abroad

October 2025  ·  8 min read
Modern medical clinic facility

The rapid growth of regenerative medicine in Latin America and other international destinations has created a wide spectrum of options — from exceptional clinics operating at the highest medical standards to operators with no meaningful clinical oversight. For patients considering treatment abroad, knowing how to distinguish between them is not optional. It is the most important step in the entire process.

We wrote this guide to help patients ask the right questions — of any clinic, including ours. Transparency on these points is not just an ethical standard; it's a practical signal of operational quality.

Start with Accreditation

The first question to ask any clinic is: what are your accreditations, and can you provide documentation? Meaningful accreditations include:

If a clinic cannot provide documentation for these certifications, that is a significant red flag. Legitimate facilities are proud to share this information.

Verify the Physician's Credentials

The physician administering your treatment should hold active board certification in a relevant specialty — not a certificate from a "regenerative medicine" continuing education course. Ask specifically:

Credentials should be verifiable. In Mexico, all licensed physicians are listed in the Cédula Profesional database (cedulaprofesional.sep.gob.mx). Request the physician's cedula number and verify it.

Biological Traceability: Follow the Cells

This is the area where the most consequential differences between legitimate and questionable operations emerge. Every cell preparation administered to a patient should have a documented chain of custody from donor to patient. Ask for:

The traceability test Ask the clinic to provide a Certificate of Analysis for the specific cell lot you will receive. A legitimate operation will have this document ready. If the answer is "we don't have that" or "the cells come from our supplier," ask for the supplier's documentation. Absence of this documentation is a disqualifying red flag.

The 11 Questions Every Patient Must Ask

1
What specific cell type will be used, and what is the source (donor, tissue type)?
2
What is the cell dose (number of cells) in my treatment protocol, and how was this determined for my condition?
3
Can you provide the Certificate of Analysis for the cell lot I will receive, including viability, sterility, and identity markers?
4
What GMP or ISO certifications does your processing laboratory hold, and can I see documentation?
5
What is your physician's specialty board certification, and how many patients have they treated with this protocol?
6
What are the most common adverse effects, and how are they managed? What is your protocol if I have a serious reaction?
7
What outcome data do you have for my specific condition? Can you share published results or your internal outcomes data?
8
What is the follow-up protocol after treatment, and how will I be monitored remotely if I return home?
9
What happens if I don't respond to treatment, or if my condition worsens? Is a retreat protocol available?
10
What is the cancellation and refund policy if I need to change my travel plans?
11
Does your facility carry liability insurance for adverse events?

Red Flags: When to Walk Away

Warning signs These should cause you to stop and reconsider any clinic you are evaluating:

Which Renuvia pathway fits this topic?

We welcome every one of these questions

At Renuvia, we can provide documentation for every item on this list. We believe informed patients make better treatment decisions — and better outcomes follow.

Renuvia provides medical evaluations and physician-led regenerative medicine protocols based on individual suitability. Regenerative therapies may not be appropriate for every patient. Outcomes vary and no specific result is guaranteed. Some therapies may be considered investigational or may not be approved by regulatory agencies such as the FDA for certain uses. All treatment decisions require physician evaluation, informed consent, and compliance with applicable local regulations.

9
¿Qué sucede si no respondo al tratamiento?
10
